Jaguar 420

This 1968 Jaguar 420 is a rare car, as it was only produced for two years (1966-68) as a transition from the S-Type to the XJ. As such it has a rear very similar to the S-Type, and a front already suggesting the XJ. The engine is the 4.2 l straight 6 with a manual transmission featuring an overdrive.

The Wikipedia page about the model is here.

This specific example was originally sold to Switzerland, as per the Jaguar Heritage certificate. I bought it from a gentleman in the Netherlands who had a few repairs done, all of which are documented in a thick file. The car starts reliably and runs great, the overdrive making longer country road or highway trips very comfortable. The engine consumes some oil, filling up regularly with mineral Castrol keeps it happy.

Its original color was beige, as witnessed in the boot. The gun-metal grey paint suits the car well; the date of the paintjob is unknown. The wheels are not original Jaguar items. There is surface rust underneath the car, some panels where rust was a safety issue were replaced by a professional shop in Brussels (documentation exists). The car has regularly passed its technical check-up with no issues. It is officially classified as an oldtimer and registered in Luxembourg.

The interior of the car is comfortable, although not everything seems original. The  red burgundy leather imitation upholstery that fits the grey exterior very well was recently installed by the previous owner. Some wooden decoration elements seem to come from an S-Type of the same era. The plastic dashboard is visibly cracked – a to do item for aestethics.

In short: this is a very stylish and comfortable classical limousine, ideal for Sunday tours to the countryside. It has been mechanically reliable throughout my years of ownership, it’s cheap to run & insure, an uncomplicated car to simply enjoy!
